What makes the weekend puzzle different
Weekday WSJ crosswords use a 15×15 grid with roughly 70 to 78 entries. The oversized weekend puzzle expands to 21×21, which leaves room for a longer set of theme entries, more mid-length fill and a title that hints at the gimmick. Because the grid is larger, working from the crossings matters even more: a few confirmed short answers in one corner will usually unlock the long theme entries that run through it. Weekend puzzles that use the standard 15×15 grid follow the same conventions as the weekday puzzles, with a difficulty a notch above midweek.
The Journal also publishes a weekend variety puzzle, such as an acrostic, a cryptic or a Rows Garden. Those are not crosswords in the standard sense and are not indexed here; you can find them on the WSJ Puzzles page.
